Basically this is an essay penned by Bhagat Singh while he was in Lahore Central Jail in 1930, to a friend who accused him to have turned atheist due to his vanity.
To which he replied that-
His dad was indulged into religious practices although liberal at the same time and his grandfather was an Arya Samajist and and Arya Samajist could be anything but an atheist. Due to influence of his family, he was a believer in his childhood. He used to chant Gayatri Mantra in school while reciting the morning prayer.
As soon as he got into National College in Lahore, he started looking at himself as a rational and was inclined towards Marxist Socialism and this was the point where he started questioning the existence of omnipotent and omnipresent. He counter questioned his friend by asking "Haan maan hai mainu apne vicharan te sidhantan te, par ess layi main nastik kiven?" (Yes, I take pride in my principles but how is that associated with me turing into an atheist).
He accepted the fact that believe makes hardships softer and easier to deal with but what makes you a true warrior is defying the general faith and developing your inner strength. He knew that anyone who dares to question the ancient existing belief is treated as renegade and considered vainglorious. But he was a revolutionary and a revolutionary doesn't fear criticism as criticism and independent thinking were two indispensable qualities of a revolutionary. He believed that to change the world for better, one must unlearn and relearn things and critically question old beliefs as blind faith is dangerous and it dulls the brain.
He refuted the ideas of birth, rebirth and afterlife. Not only this, he also refuted the idea that all the living beings are creation of all mighty by mentioning the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin. Infact he believed that it was Human who created the presence of almighty to serve his own purpose i.e. finding solace in torment. He concluded his mounting by mentioning that he didn't even worship in his last days, as he thought it would be hypocrite and coward of him to do so.
